In poker they say that once you master the 3 P’s you will be on the way to becoming a winning poker player, what are the 3 P’s I hear you ask?
The answer is very simple... Position, Position, Position!!!!
The concept of position is vitally important to understand and master when playing poker. There are three basic types: early, middle and late.
- Early - Players on the three seats to the left of the dealer are in “Early position”. This is considered to be the worst position in poker, since you have to act first without knowing how any of the remaining players are going to play their hand.
- Middle - This allows you to gauge what those in early position did but you have players after you who will still to act. If no one has raised, there is no need to limit yourself to only the premium starting hands. One of the advantages of middle position is that there are fewer players who have not acted, and so the chances that someone will raise you are lower.
- Late - Late position is usually defined as the last two players before the blinds. When in late position you may play a greater number of hands, as you are able to see the actions of the majority of the players at the table.
Early position requires you to play stronger hands, while late position gives you the possibility of playing more drawing hands. You should only play premium starting hands from an early position. Limping in from an early position with cards you aren’t willing to call a raise with, will only cost you money! You can afford to be more aggressive the later your position is. Of course there are different betting strategies that can be used depending on your table position and the actions of your opponents, but the first thing to understand is that where you are seated in relation to the dealer makes a difference. You can improve your game right away by simply paying attention to your table position.
